Adriana - Peru

The   Project

Adriana’s Live Your Dream project will take her to Peru, where she will spend two weeks volunteering on a construction and renovation programme in the Cusco region. Working alongside local staff and other volunteers, she will complete more than 40 hours of practical work helping to improve community facilities such as schools, healthcare centres and other public spaces.

Her work could include painting, gardening, tiling, carpentry and building, depending on the needs of the projects during her stay. The aim is to help create safer, cleaner and more welcoming facilities for local communities while supporting longer-term improvements to education, healthcare and community life.

Adriana chose the project because she recognises how important a safe and supportive environment can be in shaping a young person’s life. Having benefited from this herself, she wants to use the opportunity provided by the Live Your Dream Foundation to make a practical contribution to communities with fewer resources.

The project will also be a significant personal challenge. Adriana has no previous construction experience and will need to learn new practical skills, work alongside people from different backgrounds and adapt to an unfamiliar environment.

Alongside her volunteering, Adriana hopes to develop a much deeper understanding of Peru. She plans to explore the Cusco region, including Rainbow Mountain and the salt mines of Maras, before taking on the challenge of the Inca Trail.

Her journey will finish in Lima, where she plans to visit an organisation founded by her grandfather and his friend. This will give Adriana a particularly personal connection to her adventure, allowing her to discover more about her grandfather’s contribution to Peru and the work that helped inspire her own desire to volunteer.

the   reflection

Its almost been a month since I returned from Peru and I still find myself looking back on my adventures abroad; the people I met, the rich andean culture I discovered, the endless landscapes, and all the experiences that shaped me throughout the trip.

I am forever grateful to the @jamesraofoundation for giving me the opportunity to give back to a less fortunate community, and feel incredibly lucky to have been part of the team constructing a space so essential to children’s learning and development. Knowing that I helped build a place where children can learn to be curious and discover how big the world around them is is something I will always carry with me.

Beyond the project, I deeply appreciated getting to immerse myself in Quechua culture and learn about their devotion to Pachamama, their way of life, their rich history and the distinctly human language that carries their stories and traditions through generations.

Lastly, I am endlessly grateful to have met such kind and giving people, with whom I’ve shared many highs, a few lows, and, most of all, unforgettable memories.

And to those wondering if they should apply solo next year, I couldn’t recommend it more.

Forever grateful,
Adriana
