James & Arnaud Visit Peru - 2024
July 27- After missing our flight from Lima to Cusco (due to a delayed flight) we eventually arrived at our accommodation.
July 28 - The other members of the Archeology group arrived throughout the morning, during this time we went on a walk to explore Cusco (which we did again in the afternoon with the rest of the people).
July 29 - We met up with the other members of the Archeology group who were situated in different buildings and were given an extensive historical tour of the main square of Cusco.
July 30 - After waking up between 6am-7am (something we would have to do almost every day), we received a 3h lecture on the history of Cusco and its ancient civilisations. In the afternoon we visited the site saqsaywaman.
July 31 - Spent most of the day clearing ancient Incan walls of harmful plants and marking stones using string and some calcium carbonate water.
August 1 - Finished the work we had been doing the previous day. Doing this work allows the rocks to be removed and later put back in place as part of the restoration effort.
August 2 - In the morning we participated in an offering to the "Pachamama" (mother earth) conducted by one of the local shaman. In the afternoon we learnt about the dyes and methods used by the locals when working with alpaca wool.
August 3 - We made our way to the sacred valley (the region in which Machu Picchu is located) and visited a zoo and the historical Incan site Pisca (which contains the largest burial site in latin America) on the way.
August 4 - Spent the morning exploring the small town we spent the night in and visited Machu Picchu in the afternoon.
August 5 - Returned to Cusco and spent most of the day visiting museums and historical sites.
August 6 - Spent the whole day walking through fields and picking up and classifying pieces of ancient ceramic.
August 7 - Learnt how to make ceramics as the Incas did.
August 8 - In the morning we started restoration works at another Incan site and prepared mortar. In the afternoon we used the original Incan trails to visite the site Inkiltambo
August 9 - We finished our restorarion work from the previous day.
August 10 - Departure day
