Hi, I’m Camille and I’m currently (but not for too much longer) in G12. In June 2017 I will be going to Ecuador with Camps International to help local communities build necessary infrastructure, rescue turtles and help with reforestation efforts!
I am so grateful to the Rao family for giving me the opportunity to help others because giving back to people who are less fortunate is what made me want to volunteer. One of the reasons that I chose this program is because the other volunteers and I will be working very closely with the locals to help, yes, but also to put measures in place for self-sufficiency. To me volunteering isn’t and shouldn’t always be about the short term improvements but the long term ones that secure the future of the community. The other reason that I chose this program is because I get to work with people and more specifically children, animals and the environment which are all causes worth fighting for!
My trip will take me from Guayaquil a Costal city to Quito the capital. Along the way we will be cleaning up beaches, securing turtles nests and teaching the locals about the benefits of eco-tourism that the turtles can bring and how to protect turtles from poachers. From there we will go to the rainforest where we will clean up the soils from pollution and deforestation, plant tree nurseries and maintain existing ones. Last but not least we will travel to rural communities near to Quito where we will assess their needs and do what is required for them! That could include building a classroom or sanitary buildings, teaching an English lesson or even something as simple as playing with the local children. In our down time I expect we will be able to relax on the beach, explore the arts and crafts markets of both Quito and Guayaquil and maybe if we are lucky witness wales breaching!
I’m most nervous about not being able to communicate with the locals as I speak very, very, very limited Spanish but I have been trying to learn and looking on the bright side this will be a great opportunity to learn. But all in all I am really looking forward to playing with the children, experiencing a new culture, making a difference and living my dream!
