I’m Jack from grade 10 and next year I am off to the Gold Coast of Ghana thanks to the James Rao Foundation and the Rao family.
The aim of the trip is to provide education and skills to communities which could contribute overall to better health standards within communities and potentially have a positive impact on infection and disease control.
I am volunteering for 2 community based projects in Ghana for a duration of 3 weeks. For 2 weeks, I will be working on a children’s sports and outreach project where I will provide coaching in football, athletics and rugby for disadvantaged children who do not get the chance to play sports. I will also work on presentations on topics such as child labour and health issues. The aim is to get the children off the streets and into a safe place in the afternoons after school and to provide them with education surrounding social issues that they may encounter. I will also assist in beach rugby training and help plan the annual Gold Coast beach rugby festival.
I am also going to spend a week on a medicine volunteer project working with local professionals and helping with medical outreach work by conducting basic health checks in local communities. There will be further opportunities during this week for sharing knowledge with locals on social and health issue.
I chose this work as it will give me an opportunity to understand how to provide and educate a community in basic healthcare which is something that I take for granted in France but believe that all communities should have access to. The other reason that I have chosen this project is that I am passionate about sports and the lifelong skills that people can learn which are then transferable into other areas of people’s lives and provides good citizens which can then show leadership within their communities. I have also chose to work with Projects Abroad as they are a trusted project management company but they also gave me a unique plan which covered all areas I want to aid.
