Hi, I’m Danika, from Grade 12. I have been extremely fortunate to be granted the funding from the James Rao Foundation. Thank you so much to the Rao family for providing me with this opportunity, as it’s something I’ve always wanted to do and can’t wait to go. I will be volunteering for two weeks in South Africa with horses, helping to rehabilitate and care for them.
This project is organised by Podvolunteering, they organise projects all across the world. They give you the opportunity to become part of a group who all have the same interests as you. As well as allowing me to work with horses, it also lets me experience a different culture and enable me to have a greater understanding of the challenges that developing countries face. This project allows me to have hands on experience with horses, which was essential when I was picking the project I wanted to do.
I will be volunteering in a horse rehabilitation centre in Eastern Cape, South Africa. Eastern Cape is mainly a mountainous region, with shores reaching the Indian Ocean. It’s full of vibrant cities, wildlife, rich cultures, and beautiful landscapes. It is also well known for the Addo Elephant National Park.
My journey will start at the beginning of June 2019, from Heathrow Airport; I will arrive in Eastern Cape after a 16 hour journey. Upon my arrival, I will be meeting the family that own the rehabilitation centre, as I will be staying on their farm with the other volunteers. I will be participating in the rehabilitation of horses, this includes feeding them, brushing them and riding them to help build up muscle tone. By being around them, I will be helping in the mental rehabilitation of them too, allowing them to trust humans once again. These horses are in terrible condition, most have been over worked or abused and this project allows them to have a second chance at life.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have had horses since I was little and have loved the challenge and adventure that they bring. If I can make a lasting difference on a horse’s life, it will mean so much to me.
I have always wanted to travel and I am so thankful for the James Rao family for enabling me with this opportunity.
