Jade - Philippines 2018
Hello! I’m Jade, a very lucky, super happy, absolutely amazed student of IST. I have had the best opportunity granted to me by the Rao family: I will be living my dream to travel across the world and help those in need. I cannot thank the Rao Family enough for providing me with this. Thank you!
After 23 hours of travel from Toulouse, France to Cebu, Philippines, I will start my journey. For two weeks, I will be participating in a building project to help restore the homes, schools and everyday infrastructures destroyed by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. It will gives families security in a home, a work place and schools. It all starts here. It is important for a mother to know clean water will come out of her pipes so that her children will not fall ill or a father to know he can afford to send his children to school. The basic infrastructure we take for granted every day is essential for a countries economy to thrive and give back to its people. If the people are healthy, safe and happy, worker give more, the economy moves forward and the country as a whole develops. That is why this project is important to me. I know it will improve life in the long run.
So how is it going to work when I get there? I will be staying with a local host family, discovering a completely different culture to my own. During the week we will learn local construction techniques and use them to renovate and build, ranging from digging foundation to finishing a coat of paint. I will visit some of the 7500 island of the Philippines on the weekend.
I chose to work with Projects Abroad because it gives me the chance to experience life differently with a group of people with the same interests and the same age. I will be able to have a greater understanding of the challenges developing communities have. I will also realise how lucky and privileged I am. This unique opportunity for cultural exchange, travel and community will be sure to give me the experience of a lifetime. This programme gives me the opportunity to participate in a worthwhile, hands-on project, as well as time to discover a completely different culture.
I cannot wait to start this adventure of a lifetime!
