Hi there! I’m Salome and I am one of the luckiest people you can imagine: I have been given the opportunity to live my dream and help young children under the poverty line at the other end of the world all thanks to the Live Your Dream Foundation! I thank the Rao Family from the bottom of my heart! Thank you!
On the 5th of August by adventure will begin. I will board a plane here in Toulouse, starting the longest journey and adventure of a lifetime. Stopping in Madrid and Seoul (South Korea) I will finally reach my destination Nadi Fiji, just 29 hours later! There the tropical heat wave and fusions of smells will hit me, my first experiences of a completely new but amazing culture. For four weeks I will be involved in a project, with Projects Abroad, which aims to provide sustainable educational support to the disadvantaged schools and communities in Fiji, empowering underprivileged students and helping them to improve their future prospects. For the first two weeks I will help teach children aged 6 to 9, traditional subjects such as conversational English, Maths and Science in a traditional school setting. Outside of teaching, I will be running clubs and activities such as arts and craft sessions, singing, drama and sports. For the final two weeks Fijian children are on holiday and so I will help run a Holiday school where activities and teaching will be less formal than during term time. Here I hope to have greater interaction with children and have a lot of fun while teaching them useful skills. For this amazing and absolutely exciting project I will be located in either Lautoka or Nadi, two major towns on the central island, Viti Levu, of the Fijian archipelago (with an impressive total of 330 islands!).
You might be wondering: where will you be staying for the month? Well, I will be lodged with a local host family located within a short walking distance or bus ride from my placement. An experience I can’t wait to have. Imagine I will be part of a Fijian Family for four whole weeks!
But why did I choose this project? Since the age 10 I had dreamt of being able to one day do volunteering work on the other side of the world. When I came across this project with Projects Abroad I immediately knew this was the Project for me! Why? Quite simply I love working with children as well as teaching! While working with children can be challenging, requiring large amounts of creativity, patience and energy this project will give me the unique opportunity to give something lasting to underprivileged children and make use of all my skills and knowledge. This project will also remind me of the global prevalence of poverty, my own privileges and help me develop on a personal level, helping me to find my personality and identity. Just think about it! I will be torn utterly out of my comfort zone only to dive into a completely new culture and beautiful world. It will simply be amazing! Although I am dreading my first day when I will have to stand in front of a crowd of eager kids and new staff and make my first and lasting impression!
This adventure is a test and challenge I want to overcome, proving to myself that I can save my own skin…while helping poor children hands on, face-to-face!
This will be my own adventure of a lifetime!
